The Art Workshop
From the beginning of the project we have sought to promote the
idea that life can be lived positively. One of the foundations of
this approach is our Art Programme.
Women attending the project are taught how to paint and draw and
are given a stipend for working at the centre. The benefits of this
are two fold - firstly the women are able to generate income so
that they can support themselves and their families, and perhaps
even more importantly, the process of learning new skills and taping
into their innate sense of creatively dramatically improves the
confidence and self esteem of the women. Our experience has shown
us that women who come with a sense of hopelessness about their
lives can, after spending some time in the art programme, begin
to feel useful again.
While we have a number of talented artists at the project, the
collaborative way of working ensures that even those who are less
creative play an important part in the work.
The products created are sold to raise funds for the Project. These
items include painted cards, pictures and hand painted decorative
and wall hangings panels. Life Home Project is also able to undertake
commissions.
The Art Programme works under the direction of Kathy Manthei, an
artist who is a committed volunteer providing teaching and guidance
to the women at the project.
